Food & Drink Fest 2013: The Culinary Chronicles featuring Grand River

Grand River Brewing is located at 295 Ainslie St. in downtown Cambridge Ontario. Grand River is situated in an historical building which was the original home of the Galt Knife Company, the manufacturer of industrial knives for the last 100 years.

Grand River Brewing is committed to producing fresh craft brewed beers of outstanding quality for discerning beer drinkers with a goal to produce full flavoured beer with alcohol contents less than 5% for today’s population concerned about over indulgence.

Some of Grand Rivers year round featured beers are the 1913 Traditional, which is The 1913 traditional is a light golden ale with subtle layers of biscuit malt and delicate German hops. The 1913 is named after their famed building originally constructed by the old Galt Knife Company built in 1913. Available at the brewery.

A second feature is, Galt Knife Old Style Lager, which was named after their historical building that was once home to the Galt Knife Company. Available at the brewery and LCBO.

Get ready for Hamilton’s most delicious party: The 8th Annual Food & Drink Fest!

Throw off the effects of the drab, rainy weather and welcome Spring by attending one of Hamilton’s premier food and drink events: The 8th Annual Food & Drink Fest….the Festival with Taste! The 2012 Fest takes place from April 12 -14th at Careport Expo Centre, located at 270 Longwood Road South in Hamilton (On the corner of Aberdeen and Longwood. Take the Aberdeen exit off the 403). If you’ve never been to the show you are in for an amazing culinary and “liquid” experience, and if you have attended you have an idea of the delights that await your palate and your senses.

Over 150 of Hamilton, Niagara, and Halton Regions’ most popular restaurants, artisan bakeries craft breweries and wineries will be displaying their finest products…just for you!

Once inside Careport Expo Centre you’ll be given a complementary wine glass. Your next step is to buy sample tickets to spend at the various booths. For $10.00, you’ll receive 12 tickets and for $20.00, you’ll get 25 tickets. Keep in mind that most samples will “cost” 1-6 tickets.

Take your time to make the rounds of the booths to see what is available, and remember to enjoy the music, live demonstrations and the vibe from the rest of the crowd while you are there.

What restaurants will you discover at the fest? Expect to see the Bread Bar, Ivy’s Bar & Kitchen, Cafe Palazzo, Slainte Irish Pub, My Thai, Wrapscallion, Red Canoe Bistro, The Courtyard Restaurant and Denningers, among others.

Wineries will include Caroline Cellars, Cornerstone Estate, Palatine Hills Estate Winery, Puddicombe Estate Farms and Winery, Vineland Estate Winery, Rockway Glen Golf Course & Estate Winery, and others.

Hamilton, Ontario.  Before Food & Drink Fest, we hope to bring you a “behind the scenes” sneak-peak of many of the restaurants, gourmet food options, bakeries, local wineries and breweries.  Getting to know the Chefs, Bakers, Winemakers or the Brewmasters behind our local culinary scene isn’t always an experience we, the foodies, are privy to  have. The team at Food & Drink Fest believes that it is an important and organic step in a foodie’s culinary experience, so we encourage you to read on…then have the opportunity to meet these individuals at the show. The final product, nothing is better than a beer after a good round of golf, skate on the ice, etc.

3. What lead you to a career in beer?

Playing squash one day with a person working with Creemore Springs Brewery, he mentinoned they needed someone to do quality control work in the on premise accounts.  Drinking beer and visiting bars? Who could say no?!

4. What is your favorite food pairing with beer?

I have found each beer works well with different foods, last night I had a Creemore Springs Urbock beer can chicken, the sweetness of the carmel malt added a wonderful flavor.

5. What’s your favorite international beer?

Guiness

6. Do you cook with beer? If so what’s your favorite recipe?

Lobster, fresh from Canada’s eastern seaboard with St. Amborise Apricot ale

Lamb fresh from Metheral meats in Singhampton with Creemore Urbock

Heirloom carrots, slightly steamed covered with a garlic butter.

Beefsteak tomato sliced with balsamic vinegar and seasalt, ground pepper.

Sweet potato sliced and cooked with maple syrup.

Vanilla ice cream for dessert with a Guiness
